In many respects, the battles that are present are
predominantly North v. South. Yet, the underlying battle is fought between modernity
and tradition. It is here where the dynamic of rural vs. urban can be seen. To a great
extent, Tara represents the tradition of the past, anachronistic to the modern setting.
When Scarlett assumes control of Tara, she "goes to town" to make money and generate her
business, which is done not at Tara. Atlanta, itself, is seen as a representation of
modernity, and not connected to the past. Rhett being in Atlanta also represents this
modernity, when Scarlett must leave Tara to seek money for it. She goes to Atlanta, the
city, to generate money. In the end, the urban realm is a domain where money is
present, where modernity seems to take place. Tara, and the rural tradition of the
South, is something that exists in the urban domain and the film establishes this
dichotomy in a clear terms.
