Conisder reviewing the concept of the italian Commedia
Dell'arte in relationship to Volpone. Jonson considered the stock characters (Servant,
Master, Lovers, and Clowns) when he was creating his characters for
Volpone.
Also, consider the purpose and direction of
comedies versus tragedies. In Comedy those who break social norms and custom must
resolve and conform by the end of the play.
In tragedies,
particularly Jacobean tragedy those who are unwilling or unable to conform to societal
norms of morality must die.
Consider the ways Jonson deals
with the idea of huburis, and the tragic flaw in his anti-hero characters like Mosca and
Volpone. How might you compare these characters to tragic heroes who suffer because of
their inability to overcome their fatal flaw.
