What are the gothic elements of the Ridley Scott film Bladerunner?

What an excellent question! l had never considered the
gothic elements in Blade Runner (or its parent novel, Do
Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
) before, but it certainly fits most aspects
of the genre. Despite being set in the future, Blade
Runner
contains many aspects of Gothic literature: The ruin and decay of
society; the likelihood of death; a world in chaos; and a society where a privileged few
use irrational means instead of reason. The setting is dark, and many of the ruined
buildings are mindful of the crumbling castles and Victorian houses of 19th and 20th
century gothic novels. Dreams and nightmares are both important factors, and madness
rules over sanity. There are even women in distress (though most of the replicant
females have little need of a male savior).
